Exploring the Enchanting Maine Coast; a Journey of Lighthouses, Lobsters & Laid-Back Charm
Portland- A Gastronomic Gateway
Exploring Portland’s cobblestone streets in the old port district, we discovered quaint boutiques, cozy café’s and a vibrant music scene that added to the city’s allure. Our charming apartment provided the perfect base for our adventures, complete with 12-foot-high ceilings, crown molding, and an antique décor that transported us to another era, one that rivaled our place in Long Beach, CA.
Being a food enthusiast, I was in culinary heaven in Portland, a true gastronomic gateway. Indulging in Maine’s famous lobster rolls made with mayo or drawn butter was music to my stomach. Places like Highroller, Luke’s on the Pier, and Fore Street Restaurant offered its unique twist on this seafood delicacy. Meanwhile, Lynda found her favorite in the cheesy Lobster Grill Cheese at Highroller, which she still raves about.
Here are 3 of My Favorite Restaurants in the City:
Highroller: Located on a bustling street, Highroller may resemble an old nostalgic 50’s diner from the outside, but don’t be fooled- it’s much more than that. This charming spot tops my list for Lobster rolls, featuring a delightful selection of sauces like Roasted Jalapeno Mayo, Lime Mayo, and Garlic Mayo, which elevate the rolls to an unforgettable culinary experience. While many Lobster Rolls come with mayonnaise, Highroller’s creative sauce combinations make it stand out. Lynda can’t stop talking about their cheesy Lobster Grill Cheese, a true delight for any Lobster enthusiast. 104 Exchange Street, Portland – highrollerlobster.com.
Luke’s on the Pier: Located at the end of the dock in downtown Portland, Luke’s on the Pier may seem like a tourist trap but offers much more than meets the eye. With unbeatable waterfront views, trendy décor, and a lively atmosphere, this place not only serves delicious lobster rolls, but also boasts one of the best deals in town- a steamed lobster dinner for two for only $43.00 mkt priced. 60 Portland Pier, Portland – lukeslobster.com.
Fore: Nestled down a cobblestone path in a bustling alley, Fore is a personal favorite. While it may be comparably expensive to some other restaurants in the city, the dining experience is worth every penny. During our son Matthew’s 22nd birthday celebration, we savored a fabulous grilled lobster pasta dish, a true indulgence. While some dishes may be pricey, we discovered a delightful surprise in their appetizer of steamed mussels in a wine/garlic/butter broth with bread, priced at a reasonable $17.00. The generously proportioned dish was perfect for sharing among the three of us. These days, Lynda and I have visited Fore again mainly for their delicious mussels, completed by a refreshing cocktail for a reasonably priced dinner for two. Kennebunkport- Seaside Sophistication
This elegant coastal town know for is quaint boutique shops, high-end restaurants lining the streets reminds me a bit of a smaller version of Myrtle Beach SC. We went exploring to see the sights, including the summer residence of the Bush family.
Cape Elizabeth- Light and Love
Just a short drive South from Portland, Cape Elizabeth awaits, home to one of Maine’s iconic lighthouses-Portland Head. Perched majestically on a rocky cliff, this historic beacon guided mariners safely since 1791. The views of the Atlantic Ocean crashing against the rocks, provides the perfect backdrop for a perfect picture.
Booth Bay- Where Garden Trolls meet the Sea
Nestled along the ruggedly picturesque coast of Maine, Boothbay is a charming coastal town that captures the essence of New England’s maritime allure. Known for its stunning beauty, vibrant harbor and unique botanical garden, Boothbay lures its visitors with its coastal charm.
A must-visit is the Coastal Maine Botanical Garden. This oasis of natural beauty spans over 300 acres and showcases an impressive collection of plants, flowers, and features, hidden through its native woods, tall wooden Trolls with messages in each one. Designed by Thomas Dambo, a leading Danish material artist created sculptures telling a story of conservation. Kids will have fun doing a scavenger hunt looking for each of the trolls.
Camden- A Picture-Perfect Postcard & Village
Acadia National Park- Natures Masterpiece
Known as the crown jewel of Maine’s coast, this enchanting haven offers a colorful tapestry of landscapes, from dense forests and serene lakes to rugged granite cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Coast.
Hike to the summit of Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the East Coast. Explore the Park loop road, stopping along the road for iconic spots like “Thunder Hole and Sand Beach. We had a lovely hike around Jordan Pond, an easy 3.5 mile loop that encircles the pond, offering a leisurely and picturesque hike suitable for all ages. Don’t miss the picture opportunity along the shores of the pond, you’ll be regarded with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, notably the twin peaks called “The Bubbles-North & South, which reflect beautifully on the glassy waters, creating a picture-perfect panorama.
Bar Harbor-Coastal Delights
After a day of adventure in Acadia, treat yourself to some relaxation in the charming town of Bar Harbor. With its picturesque clapboard houses, quaint boutiques and shops, and delightful fresh seafood, Bar Harbor exudes a serene coastal vibe. Stroll along the waterfront and immerse yourself in the plethora of shops catering to the tourists every need. Be sure to indulge yourself in all the fresh seafood, especially the must-try Lobster Roll and other delicious delicacies. We were fortunate enough to visit Bar Harbor on the 4th of July and were pleasantly amazed by the breathtaking fireworks show.
